TW Radio 88.9 has been named Tourism-Oriented Media of the Year at the 2026 Central Regional Tourism Awards, held on Wednesday, September 30, at the Coconut Grove Beach Resort, Elmina. The annual awards, organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Central Region, recognize excellence, innovation and the contribution of key players to the development of the region’s tourism and hospitality sector.

The awards cover various areas of the industry, including hotels, restaurants, tour operators, tour guides, media platforms and tourist attractions, alongside honorary recognitions for individuals who have contributed to tourism development in the region. This year’s ceremony was held under the theme, “Celebrating Excellence Beyond Borders – The Black Star Experience.”

The recognition follows TW Radio’s consistent efforts to promote tourism, culture and heritage, particularly through its Tourism Central and Visit Cape Coast initiatives. Through Tourism Central, the station explores various tourist attractions across the Central Region, bringing attention to destinations, historical sites and experiences that form part of the region’s tourism offering.

The Visit Cape Coast initiative goes beyond promoting the city as a tourism destination. It is also aimed at attracting investment into Cape Coast and the wider region by showcasing the city’s tourism potential, cultural heritage, coastline, educational history and opportunities for businesses and investors.

TW Radio has also maintained extensive coverage of major cultural festivals and events in the region, including the Oguaa Fetu Afahye, Simpa Aboakyer Festival and Edina Bakatue Festival among many. The coverage provides a platform for showcasing traditional practices, local communities and Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

The station has further supported tourism-related activities including PANAFEST, Emancipation Day, World Tourism Day, Afro Torch and recently Fante Fest London, using both its radio and digital platforms to create awareness and promote participation. Its tourism and heritage content has also extended beyond Ghana. TW Radio recently produced a mini-documentary on Celtic FC, Scotland’s oldest football club, giving its audience an international perspective on sports, history and heritage.

The station’s home, Sarbah House, is itself part of Cape Coast’s rich historical story. The building is associated with John Mensah Sarbah, the pioneering Ghanaian lawyer, nationalist and educationist who became the first native of the Gold Coast to be called to the English Bar in 1887. Mensah Sarbah was also a co-founder of the Aborigines’ Rights Protection Society (ARPS) in 1897 and played an important role in the development of education in Cape Coast, including helping to establish and shape Mfantsipim School.

Sarbah House also serves as a reminder of Oguaa’s traditional history. The building served as the palace of Nana Kwadwo Mbra V, privately known as Kofi Kakraba, the long-serving Omanhen of the Oguaa Traditional Area. Nana Kwadwo Mbra V was born into the Royal Ebiradze family and was selected for kingship at the age of 12. He was officially enstooled as Omanhen on July 27, 1948, and reigned peacefully for 48 years until his passing in August 1996.

The Tourism-Oriented Media of the Year award adds to TW Radio’s recognition for using radio, digital media and community engagement to promote Cape Coast, the Central Region and Ghana’s tourism, culture and heritage. The station remains committed to telling the stories of the region, promoting its attractions and creating greater awareness of the investment and tourism opportunities available across the Central Region.
