1. Wesley Girls’ High School (WGHS)


Wesley Girls' High School (WGHS) is a renowned all-girls institution located in Cape Coast, Central Region, Ghana. Founded in 1836 by Harriet Wrigley, wife of a Methodist minister, the school was named in honor of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. 

 

WGHS has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and discipline. In 2003, it was ranked 68th among the top 100 high schools in Africa by Africa Almanac, based on education quality, student engagement, alumnae influence, and visibility. 2. St. Augustine’s College (Augusco)


St. Augustine’s College, affectionately known as "Augusco," is a renowned all-male Catholic boarding secondary school located in Cape Coast, Ghana. It was established in 1930 by the Roman Catholic Church at Amissano, near Elmina, as the first Catholic secondary school in Ghana. Initially serving as both a training college and seminary, it was later moved to Cape Coast in 1933 to better serve the educational needs of the Catholic community.

 

The school was named after St. Augustine of Hippo (354–430 AD), one of the great early Christian theologians. Its motto, "Omnia Vincit Labor" (Perseverance Conquers All), reflects the school’s strong emphasis on discipline, hard work, and academic excellence. The foundation stone for the new campus was laid in 1935, and Fr. Maurice B. Kelly, the then-Dean of the Amissano Training College, became the school’s first headmaster.

 

3. Mfantsipim School (Kwabotwe)


Mfantsipim School, affectionately known as "The School," is a prestigious all-boys boarding secondary school located in Cape Coast, Ghana. It was founded in 1876 by the Methodist Church as Wesleyan High School, making it the oldest secondary school in Ghana. The school was established to promote intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth among young men on the then Gold Coast. Its first headmaster, James Picot, a French scholar, was only 18 years old at the time of his appointment.

 

Mfantsipim School holds a special place in the hearts of many Ghanaians. Affiliated with the Methodist Church, this boys’ school has a long-standing tradition of excellence. 4. Adisadel College (Adisco)


Adisadel College, popularly known as "Adisco," is an Anglican boys' boarding school in Cape Coast, Ghana, founded in 1910 by Rt. Rev. Nathaniel T. Hamlyn. As one of the oldest secondary schools in the country, it has a strong tradition of academic excellence and discipline. 5. Holy Child School (Holico)


Holy Child School, also known as Angel's Hill, is a Catholic girls' senior high school in Cape Coast, founded in 1946 by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ). With the motto "Facta Non Verba" (Action Not Words), the school is committed to providing holistic education to develop young women into "Women of Substance." Ranked among Africa’s top 10 schools in 2003, it has produced top-performing students, including the best and second-best overall candidates in the 2017 WASSCE.

6. Ghana National College


Ghana National College was founded in 1948 by the man who later became the first president of Ghana. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah used his own funds to start the institution for eight students who had been expelled by the British colonial administration from St. Augustine’s College. The school is located on a hill 5 miles east of the historic Castle town of Cape Coast right off the Accra – Takoradi highway.

Ghana National College is a co-ed boarding secondary school (high school) with roots originally stemmed in the sciences but currently offering a wide range of core and elective high school courses from fine arts to languages and business. Male students live in four dormitories on the north side of the campus and the female students live in eight dormitories on the south side overlooking part of the city of Cape Coast.

 

7. Aggrey Memorial A.M.E. Zion Senior High School


Named after the great African scholar Dr. James Kwegyir Aggrey, this mixed-gender school was founded in 1940. The school emphasizes academic success, cultural identity, and spiritual growth.
