Senior Prison Officer interdicted over alleged attempt to smuggle Indian Hemp into Kete Krachi prison

The Ghana Prisons Service has interdicted a senior officer following his arrest for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Kete-Krachi Local Prison.
In a statement issued by its Public Affairs Department, the Service identified the officer as Chief Officer Michael Osei-Bonsu, who was arrested after prison officials detected the suspected narcotic substance during routine security checks.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on June 19, 2026, before the commencement of the officer’s night shift. Vigilant officers conducting standard security screening reportedly discovered and retrieved the suspected contraband at the prison gate.
Following the arrest, the officer was handed over to the Kete-Krachi District Police for further investigations.
The Ghana Prisons Service disclosed that the suspect has since been arraigned before the Kete-Krachi District Magistrate Court and remanded into custody for two weeks.
The case has been adjourned to July 8, 2026.
In line with the regulations governing the Service, Chief Officer Osei-Bonsu has been interdicted pending the outcome of both the criminal proceedings and internal disciplinary investigations.
The Ghana Prisons Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict discipline and professionalism within the institution, stressing that it operates a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offences and the smuggling of prohibited items into prison facilities.
The Service also commended the officers whose vigilance led to the detection of the suspected contraband and reiterated its determination to prevent the introduction of illegal substances, mobile phones and other prohibited items into correctional facilities across the country.
Officials assured the public that the Service remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, security and accountability in the discharge of its mandate.
The Service noted it will continue to collaborate closely with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that any officer found engaging in criminal activities is dealt with in accordance with the law.
