John Mahama Becomes Ghana's First Non-Consecutive Two-Term President

John Dramani Mahama has been sworn in as Ghana's president for a third term, following his victory in the December 2024 elections. The inauguration ceremony took place at Accra's Black Star Square, attended by numerous African leaders, including Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, Kenya's President William Ruto, Burkina Faso’s President Capt. Ibrahim Traoré, President Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana among many dignitaries.
The event, held at Accra’s iconic Black Star Square on January 7, 2025, was attended by dignitarie s from across Africa and beyond, symbolizing Ghana’s continued role as a beacon of democracy on the continent.
Mahama previously served as president from July 2012 to January 2017. His return to the presidency comes amid Ghana's worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation, with citizens expressing hope for economic improvement and better governance under his leadership.
In his inaugural address, President Mahama emphasized his commitment to addressing Ghana's economic challenges, including high inflation and unemployment. He pledged to focus on economic restoration, stabilization, good governance, and combating corruption.
The December election was deemed peaceful by the regional bloc ECOWAS, reflecting Ghana's continued commitment to democratic principles. Mahama's administration is expected to prioritize economic recovery efforts, including reforms in key sectors such as agriculture and infrastructure, to restore public trust and improve livelihoods.
