Ghana has taken a major step forward in strengthening its international security partnerships following an official visit by Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission.

Welcoming her to Ghana, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang described the visit as a significant milestone in deepening the longstanding relationship between Ghana and the European Union. The engagement culminated in the signing of the Ghana–European Union Security and Defence Partnership, making Ghana the first African country to enter into this strategic arrangement. The partnership places Ghana alongside key global partners such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Norway.

The Vice President highlighted the European Union’s sustained support to Ghana’s security architecture through initiatives like the European Peace Facility and the EU Security and Defence Initiative. These programmes have funded more than 30 projects across critical areas, including conflict prevention, counterterrorism, border management, maritime security, and cybersecurity.

A major highlight of the visit was the handover of advanced security equipment to Ghana’s security services. The package included Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) vehicles, counter-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems, motorcycles, and drones. These resources are expected to significantly boost the operational readiness and responsiveness of Ghana’s security agencies in addressing emerging threats.

Addressing recent developments in the sub-region, particularly the tragic killing of Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso, Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the urgent need for stronger international collaboration to safeguard peace and stability. She reiterated that peace remains the bedrock of sustainable development and collective security, calling for continued cooperation between Ghana and its global partners.

The visit by Kaja Kallas and the agreements reached underscore Ghana’s growing role as a key security partner in West Africa, as well as the European Union’s commitment to supporting peace and stability across the region.
