Iconic Nigerian musician and Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has been posthumously honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, making him the first African artist ever to receive the prestigious recognition.

The Recording Academy, organizers of the Grammy Awards, announced the honor as part of its 2025 Special Merit Awards, celebrating Fela’s “extraordinary contribution to music and enduring influence on global sound.”

Fela Kuti’s groundbreaking fusion of jazz, funk, highlife, and African rhythms not only created the Afrobeat genre but also shaped generations of artists across the world. His bold lyrics and unflinching social commentary turned music into a tool of resistance, addressing political corruption, injustice, and the struggle for freedom in post-colonial Africa.

The award recognizes his lifelong commitment to using art as a platform for truth and empowerment. “Fela’s legacy extends far beyond his music  it represents courage, creativity, and the unbreakable spirit of the African people,” the Recording Academy said in its citation.

Born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 1938, Fela’s influence continues to reverberate decades after his passing in 1997. His works, including timeless hits like Water No Get Enemy, Zombie, and Gentleman, remain staples of resistance and artistic brilliance around the world.

Music historians and fans across the continent have hailed the recognition as a watershed moment for African music, cementing Fela’s global legacy as both a cultural icon and a revolutionary voice.

With the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Fela Kuti’s name now stands among global music legends whose contributions have transcended eras  a fitting tribute to a man who once declared that music is the weapon of the future.
