Apple is losing more than $1 billion a year on its streaming service, the Information reported on Thursday, citing two people familiar with the matter. The tech giant has spent more than $5 billion a year on content since launching Apple TV+ in 2019 but trimmed it by around $500 million last year, the report said. Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Apple TV+, known for original shows such as "Ted Lasso", "The Morning Show", "Shrinking", and "Severance", has lagged behind rivals Netflix (NFLX.O) Disney+ (DIS.N) and Amazon.com's Prime Video (AMZN.O) in terms of subscribers.

Industry leader Netflix had a total subscriber count of 301.63 million, according to the latest data, while Disney+ had 124.6 million users followed by Warner Bros Discovery at 116.9 million. The iPhone maker does not break down the subscribers for Apple TV+ but it is estimated to have reached 40.4 million at the end of 2024, according to five analysts polled by Visible Alpha.

Apple TV+ productions have earned more than 2,500 nominations and 538 wins, CEO Tim Cook said in a post earnings call in January. As competition heats up in the streaming industry, media companies are increasingly bundling their services at discounted rates to appeal to price-conscious consumers.

Apple TV+ is part of a bundle offered by Comcast (CMCSA.O) that combines the service with Peacock and Netflix at $15 per month. Apple TV+ costs $9.99 per month in the U.S when bought separately. The Cupertino, California-based company also bundles Apple TV+ with services such as iCloud, Apple Music and others under the Apple One program.

Addressing the players and technical team, President Mahama acknowledged the team’s recent struggles but expressed faith in their ability to reverse the situation. “We didn’t qualify for the AFCON. "We still believe that the Black Stars can find its glory again. And it’s dependent on you, the technical team, and the management committee.” he noted. The President also reminded the players that while the nation stands behind them, their success ultimately depends on their commitment and effort on the pitch.

“The goals will come from these feet that are right here. And so it takes sacrifice. It takes strength. We all like to watch you when you play for your teams, and we expect that you bring some of that dedication to the national team.” he said. The Black Stars are set to face Chad on March 21 before playing Madagascar three days later in Morocco as they aim to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.

Ghanaian singer, Cina Soul, has ruled out the possibility of dating within the entertainment industry. She has stated that she prefers a partner from a different professional background.

Speaking on Joy Prime, the 'Ojorley' hitmaker, emphasised that while some artistes find success in 'industry relationships', she is seeking variety and new perspectives in her personal life.

According to her, while relationships between artistes can work for some people, she personally finds it limiting. She believes having a partner from a different professional background would bring diversity and fresh experiences into their relationship. "I feel like an artiste dating another artiste is a bit tricky.

It works for some, but for me, I want something different. I want us to come home and talk about different things. Maybe how was the hospital? How was the court? How was the bank? Not always about the studio or the same industry issues," she explained.

Reggae singer and Jamaican national icon Cocoa Tea has died. He was 65. The singer, born Calvin George Scott, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Malvia Scott, the singer’s wife, confirmed the death to the newspaper the Jamaica Gleaner. She told the paper that he was diagnosed with lymphoma and pneumonia in recent years.

“He was definitely very brave,” Malvia Scott told the Gleaner. "He was positive throughout it all. About three weeks ago when he was admitted in the hospital he asked if I was worried and I said 'I am always worried'. He told me not to worry because everything was going to be all right. He was always very hopeful.” The singer, born in the small village of Rocky Point, Jamaica, was known for his romantic, honey-sweet voice that shaped and shifted with generations of dancehall and lovers rock.

Singles “Rocking Dolly” and “I Lost My Sonia” were defining genre hits in the ’80s, and his debut LP “Weh Dem a Go Do…Can’t Stop Cocoa Tea” made him a superstar within Jamaican music and globally among reggae fans. Follow-ups like “The Marshall” and “Come Again” incorporated more spiritual Rastafarian lyrical themes, and he joined a supergroup with Shabba Ranks and Home T that scored a big hit with “Holding On.”

Cocoa Tea remained politically resonant and adaptable as dancehall turned grittier into the ’90s. After moving to New York, he released the searing social-critique single “Riker’s Island” in 1991, and anti-war tracks “No Blood for Oil” and “Oil Ting” that opposed the first Gulf War, leading to radio bans in Jamaica and the U.K.

He kept up his string of genre hits throughout the decade with releases on top reggae labels Greensleeves and VP, with Motown issuing a compilation “Holy Mt. Zion” in 1997. He founded his own label, Roaring Lion, which released records by top acts such as Buju Banton, Cutty Ranks and Sizzla, and paid tribute to America’s first Black president with a 2008 single “Barack Obama.”

He performed at Buju Banton's Long Walk to Freedom concert in Kingston in 2019, and last performed three years ago on the Welcome to Jamrock cruise. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness wrote on Instagram that “I extend condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of Calvin George Scott, affectionately known as Cocoa Tea. His smooth vocals and compelling lyrics gave us timeless classics like ‘Rocking Dolly' and ‘I’ve Lost My Sonia,’ songs that have become anthems in our cultural landscape.”

“Beyond his musical genius,” Holness continued, “Cocoa Tea was a beacon of kindness and generosity, consistently uplifting the less fortunate and embodying the warmth of our nation. Cocoa Tea’s influence extended beyond our shores, touching hearts worldwide and solidifying Jamaica’s place on the global musical stage.”

Cocoa Tea is survived by wife Malvia and eight children.

The Government of Ghana has formalized a crucial debt treatment agreement with its Official Creditors Committee (OCC) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a significant step towards restoring long-term debt sustainability.

The agreement, co-chaired by China and France, was disclosed in a statement from the Ministry of Finance dated January 29, 2025. This milestone comes after Ghana, in December 2022, suspended portions of its external debt servicing to commercial and bilateral lenders amid a deep economic crisis.

At the time, inflation had soared to a staggering 54%, while international reserves had plunged to less than two months of import cover. The nation embarked on a comprehensive debt restructuring journey, including the successful completion of its Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) in 2023.

A year ago, on January 12, 2024, Ghana reached an agreement with its Official Creditors under the G20 Common Framework for Debt Treatments, going beyond the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI). However, it has taken another year to finalize and formalize the terms through the MoU.

“With the MoU now signed, the agreed terms will be implemented through bilateral agreements with each OCC member,” the Finance Ministry’s statement confirmed. According to the International Monetary Fund’s December 2024 report, Ghana is set to benefit from a substantial debt servicing relief of approximately $2.86 billion. Of this amount, an estimated $657 million is expected to be realized within 2025, providing much-needed fiscal space for economic recovery.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rejected Samuel Eto’o’s candidacy for a position on its executive committee, citing ethical concerns and regulatory irregularities.

The decision, made public following a CAF Governance Committee meeting on January 24, 2025, marks a significant setback for the Cameroon Football Federation (FÉCAFOOT) president, who had hoped to ascend to a key role in African football governance.

Eto’o, widely celebrated for his illustrious playing career, has faced growing scrutiny since assuming the FÉCAFOOT presidency. His rejection stems primarily from sanctions imposed by the FIFA Ethics and Discipline Committee over incidents during the U20 World Cup in Colombia and his controversial collaboration with the betting platform 1XBet.

CAF had already sanctioned Eto’o in July 2024 for the latter association, which many critics viewed as a conflict of interest. Despite this obstacle, the former FC Barcelona striker remains defiant. In a recent statement to RFI, he vowed to fight for his candidacy, asserting his right to due process.

“No one can prevent me from being a candidate… We have enough evidence to prove our innocence,” Eto’o declared, signalling his intent to appeal the decision through appropriate legal channels.

This development highlights the challenges Eto’o faces as he navigates the complexities of football administration, a far cry from his glory days on the pitch.

From the battle cries of freedom fighters to the beats that stir the soul, art and politics have always had a close, sometimes combustible, relationship. Whether it’s through songs, paintings, poetry, or performances, the artist has long been the voice of resistance, a beacon of hope, and an amplifier of the people’s will. In Ghana, as in much of the world, art has both fought and fueled political causes, and its influence continues to reverberate through the corridors of power. But as with any powerful tool, there’s a fine line between art serving the people and art serving political agendas.

Art as a Weapon for Change:

Historically, artists have been at the forefront of political movements, using their work to question the status quo, provoke thought, and mobilize masses. Who can forget the revolutionary music of the 1980s, when Ghana’s musicians used their lyrics to challenge political oppression and demand change? In those turbulent times, songs weren’t just melodies; they were anthems for protest, a soundtrack to a generation’s fight for democracy.

In Ghana and across the globe, music has been a significant voice for the marginalized, the oppressed, and the disillusioned. Whether it’s Bob Marley’s reggae rhythms pushing for social justice, or Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat challenging Nigeria’s military dictatorship, art has always had the power to push against authority. It’s not merely entertainment; it’s a call to action.

In Ghana, musicians like Sarkodie, A-Plus, Stonebwoy and Blakk Rasta have used their platforms to express the people’s frustrations. Music became a tool for political mobilization and societal change, connecting generations through shared struggles. These artists knew that with every note, every lyric, they could spark a movement.

John Dumelo

Politicians Using Art to Mobilize:

But it’s not just the artists who have seen the power in art. Politicians, too, have long understood its potential as a strategic tool. Whether it’s through campaign jingles, concert rallies, or endorsements from celebrities, political campaigns have harnessed art to amplify their messages and win hearts and votes. From the days of President Kwame Nkrumah’s pan-African rhetoric to the NDC’s recent efforts in enlisting popular musicians for their campaigns, the union of politics and art is as old as the republic itself.

Think about the energy of those campaign concerts—sometimes more like a cross between a rally and a nightclub—where the air is thick with political slogans and the beat drops just as the party’s manifesto is being drummed into the minds of the youth. It’s no accident that music, which already holds sway over public sentiment, is used to consolidate political power. In the 2024 elections, we saw top-tier artists like Samini and Naceegetting involved, not just for the love of music, but to ensure their political allegiance was as loud and clear as their hits. It’s a formula that’s worked well for parties in the past, using the reach of popular music to transcend the barriers of traditional political discourse.

Prince David Osei

The Influence of Art on Politics (and Vice Versa)

Art’s relationship with politics is symbiotic. Art influences politics by shaping public opinion, reflecting societal mood, and offering new ways to view the world. Politicians, in turn, use art to control and communicate. The more vibrant and impactful the art, the more it shapes the political environment. In Ghana, the election season saw street murals, billboards with catchy slogans, and musical performances that were as much about political messaging as they were about entertainment. Politicians increasingly understand that they must tap into the creative economy to connect with voters—particularly the younger, more digitally-savvy generations who consume music and content at an unprecedented rate.

However, this fusion of art and politics comes with a heavy dose of responsibility. While it is powerful for musicians and artists to use their craft for the betterment of society, it is equally important that they do not allow themselves to be manipulated into pushing narrow political agendas that benefit a select few, rather than the collective good.

Rex Omar

Walking the Fine Line

This brings us to the critical point: the need for a fine line between art and politics. Art, by its nature, should remain a tool for self-expression, for challenging norms, and for creating awareness. When it becomes too closely tied to the fortunes of a political party or an individual, it risks losing its integrity.

Consider Ghana’s history—remember the ban on nightlife and large concerts during the 1981 coup? The military government, concerned about the potential for mass mobilization, cracked down on entertainment, seeing it as a threat to their control. It’s a reminder of the dangers of blending entertainment and politics too intimately. Politicians may use art to energize their base, but once it crosses into coercion or censorship, it loses its power to serve the people.

Artists must remain vigilant, ensuring that their creativity serves society, not narrow political interests. They should continue to be vocal, using their craft as tools for social commentary and change—but always for the benefit of the people, and not to push selfish or divisive agendas.

The Power to Empower, Not Exploit

In the end, music, art, and entertainment are not just political weapons—they are instruments of empowerment. They can rally the masses, shift cultural narratives, and inspire change. But they also carry immense responsibility. Artists must be aware of the line between using their platform for societal good and being co-opted into a political machine.

As the Ghanaian political landscape continues to evolve, we must remember that art’s true power lies in its ability to unite us, not divide us. The fine line between art and politics should not be a line of compromise, but a line of clarity—one that ensures creativity remains free, honest, and, most importantly, beneficial to all. So, let the artists be the voices of the people, but let them also be the guardians of their own art, staying true to their craft and to the wider good.

Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has dismissed earlier claims that his Instagram account was hacked. In a video shared on his Instagram story on Sunday night, 2Baba confirmed that a controversial post on his social media page regarding his separation from his wife, Annie Idibia, was indeed made by him.

Recall that the earlier Instagram post announced the end of his 13-year marriage to Annie. The post read, “Hello to my beautiful people of all federations. Well, this thing I have to say is short but also long…I and Annie Macaulay have been separated for a while now, and currently filed for divorce.

“I would grant a press release soon to say my story. Not because it is anyone’s right to know about my personal life but because I love my people and I need them to know my innocence or offence. Stay blessed my people. I love you all.”

Shortly after, another post appeared on the same account, claiming that the page had been compromised. It read, “My Instagram account has been hacked, efforts are being carried out to take back control. #onelove!” In a surprising turn of events, 2Baba later released a video clarifying the situation.

President John Mahama will open the much anticipated stakeholder Education Review Conference in the middle of February 2025, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has said. The conference, he said, would examine the state and future of education and make recommendations to improve the sector, achieve equity and produce competitive and quality human capacity for the country.

The Education Minister announced this on Friday at a press briefing in Accra to mark International Day of Education, which falls on January 24. The global day is on the theme: “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

The theme, he stated, highlighted the influence of AI in reshaping education, offering unparalleled opportunities to personalize learning, automate tasks, and expand access to the most underserved communities.

Mr Iddrisu called for strong partnerships to bridge the gaps in AI to deliver high-quality education to remote areas and foster inclusivity through adaptive technologies that respond to diverse learning needs.

He said educators must be empowered to create inclusive classrooms and to design curricula that embed digital literacy, AI ethics, and critical thinking skills to thrive in an automated world. The Minister called on stakeholders to advance a future where education remained equitable, inclusive, and responsive to the challenges and opportunities of the time.

“Let us harness innovation, uphold human agency, and ensure that education continues to be a beacon of hope for every child and every community,” he said. He commended the tireless efforts of all stakeholders in the education ecosystem, saying, “Your dedication to advancing the transformative power of learning is the foundation of our nation’s development.”

To leverage the opportunities in AI, he said, the government had to expand fibre and broadband infrastructure to all educational institutions to provide access to the internet.

“You cannot prepare for a digital literacy future without internet connectivity. We need to collaborate with the Ministry of Communication and other private sectors in order to be able to ensure stable Internet connectivity,” he said.

Ghanaian record producer and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lynx Group, Richie Mensah, has proffered advice to his fellow entertainers in a recent interview on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim. Richie Mensah on the show advocated for hard work over complaints, urging artistes to take control of their careers and financial futures.

He further noted that it is better for creatives to take charge of their careers than repose their hope in government.

"Stop looking for help from the government. Do it yourself! When we entertainers start doing things properly, stop swerving taxes, and begin generating substantial income, the government will have no choice but to take notice. We need to stop thinking we're special and that we need to be chosen," he said.

Richie’s message is underscored by his company's launch of a new music distribution platform, a move aimed at empowering artistes. He explained, "we've semi-launched a music distribution platform to empower people to be creatives."

This initiative directly addresses the challenges many artistes face in navigating the complexities of the music industry. This platform promises to simplify the process and maximize opportunities for Ghanaian musicians. The email address for this platform is Email distribution@lynxfamily.com.

Mensah’s bold statement is a call for a shift in mindset within the Ghanaian entertainment industry, promoting self-sufficiency and proactive entrepreneurship over dependence on external support.

The historic win against Benfica sees the blaugranes seal their place in the next round while avoiding a play-off. The final position for the blaugranes is yet to be determined as there are still games to be played in the penultimate round of fixtures, plus the matchday eight set of fixtures. They are currently in second position on 18 points, three points behind leaders Liverpool.

In the event of a tie on points, positions will be decided on goal difference and if that is not enough then a further series of stats begging with goals scored will be taken into consideration.

As such, after completing the league phase at home against Atalanta on 29 January, there will be a hiatus until March regarding European competition for the blaugranes. The home leg will be played on 4/5 March, with the away leg on 11/12 March, and a draw beforehand will determine who plays who.

FC Barcelona

Qualification was extremely important for Hansi Flick's side, as the coach mentioned before the Benfica game that not having to contest a play-off would allow for more rest and preparation. The blaugranes are still in all three competitions and the coming months will see a demanding run of games in LaLiga, the latter stages of the Copa del Rey, plus the knockout phase of the Champions League.

A former constituency organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai has advised President John Mahama, not to repeat previous mistakes made during his first administration. According to Dr Alhaji Ben Ali Seaman, repeating such mistakes would be tantamount to total failure and disappointment for Ghanaians.

Alhaji Seaman mentioned erratic power supply, unemployment, and poor management of the economy as some of the issues that did not go well in President Mahama’s previous administration.

He continued that Ghanaians were eager and yearning for the full implementation of the 24-hour Economy, Women’s Bank, Free Tertiary Education, Free admission for level 100 tertiary students and Free SHS to all private schools.

These were contained in a Press statement issued at Anhwiaso. He indicated that Ghanaians were waiting for the scrapping of the betting tax, E -Levy, and COVID tax as well as the stabilisation of the Cedi to Dollar exchange rate and fuel prices. He warned that individuals who would be favoured to serve in Mahama’s government should not be arrogant, self-centred, and disrespectful leaders.

Alhaji Seaman expressed concern about the NPP's humiliating defeat in the 2024 polls and called for the revision of the selection of leaders from the National, Regional, and Constituency levels. He also called for the party’s electoral college to be expanded to cover all card-bearing members to exercise their franchise.

That, he noted, would enable the party members to elect dedicated leaders, selfless, and committed leaders to steer the affairs of the party.

Dear Mr. President,

I wish to state that, “Time Answers Everything“ and that, GOD makes things beautiful in HIS time. I write to first congratulate you on your election and swearing in as the first gentleman of our Motherland Ghana for the next four (4) years ending 7th of January 2029. As a proud Ghanaian and someone who belives in positivity and hard work, I strongly believe in individual`s  contribution  to achieving  the desired state that we (Ghanaians)  wish to see Ghana  gets to.

The below twenty (20)  hightlights / Pointers,  are  my   inert convictions  to  help  build  our  homeland Ghana  in attaining self-sufficiency in the medium to long term.

POINTERS:

1. Redevelopment / Realignment of the Tema Freezone enclave. Thus, taking a relook at the Free zones Act 1995, Act 504,

2. Initiating the development of the Western Freezones enclave and the Kumasi Industrial park and undoubtedly, will be one of your economic save lines in creating jobs in the medium to long term and  a Hallmark of Economic excellence when implemented,

3. Seek to enhance cohesion in the best productive manner between  Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (G.I.P.C), Ghana Free Zones Authoriry (G.F.Z.A) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (M.O.T.I),

4. Establishing and appreciating sectorial / industrial deficits starting  with  the "low  hanging  fruits“ and develop actional ways of reducing the deficits to achieve self-sufficiency and self-sustenance in the long term,

5. Revisiting the quest to limit importation of certain items / commodities industry-by-industry as started by the former government led by the Ministry of Trade and Industry but didn`t  see the light of day due to the lack of comprehensive stakeholder engagements in developing the blueprint. (To kick start a very  comprehensive stalkholder engagements -  Import substitution strategies with KPI`s).

6. A re-look at the Boankra In-land  Port Project - a comprehensive value chain assessment, very critical as this project when completed, will be pivotal in furtherance to our ecconomic expansion  to other western African countries to the north of Ghana,

7. To birth and nurture deliberate policies to building capacities of local construction firms.( One exciting occurance is the award of the Motorway rehabilitation project to MARIPOMA ENTERPRISE LIMITED, a local firm in 2024).

8. Develop dynamic policies to sync with the  African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) blueprint, taking full advantage of the existence of  AfCFTA  Headquarters in Ghana. Creating a unit within the Ministry of Trade & Industry to be tasked to transition to achieving this objective,

9. To comprehensively assess Ghana’s foreign policies regulating , monitoring and evaluating the madate of High Commssioners and Ambassadors performances / expectations. Thus, results based mandates - to be linked to GDP growth in the quest to enhance Foreign Direct Investments (FDI`s).

10. A deliberate relook at the railway sector development agenda in phases at a pace that convinces and gives hope. (Inner & Intra-City Transport enhancements bearing in mind the Boankra In-Land Port project, very pivotal)

11. In the medium to long-term, intiate the reasons for  establishing certain Ministries , Agencies and  State Owned Enterprises (SOE`s)  for re-alignments and better productive outcomes,

12. To re-tool Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (G.I.D.A) to comprehensively audit all irrigation facilities / schemes. (Human resource and facilities approach) in re-defining how best G.I.D.A can sit within the confines of Ministry of Food and Agriculture (M.O.F.A).

13. To decisively and comprehensively assess the One-District-One -Factory (1DIF) program within the first two years to see how its full potential can be realised with very robust Key Performance Indicators (KPI`s),

14. To bring on board specialties/ experts/ Civil Society Organizations (CSOs`) in the energy sector to develop continual and progressive policies to acheive self-sufficiency and self- sustainance energy sector with very minimal or no political interferences (Energy sector transformation). It is very worrying to see the anormalies in our energy sector after becoming an oil producing country since 2010, thus, 15 years and counting,

15. To re- define and establish the firm mandate of National Sports Authority (N.S.A) to fully take over the sports sector – coming out with a five to ten year development plan fully funded with result – oriented targets.

Alfred Mensah-Onumah

16. To personally take up the challenge as the President, to re-ingnite the lost Partriotic and Nationalistic attitude of the Ghanaian ( National Orientation / Mindset Change).

17. To take lead as the President in re-orienting the mindset change of Ghanaians starting from the basic school curriculum and the need to deliberately build the capacities of the teaching profession across all level ( five to fifteen year development plan).

18. To re-align the decentralization agenda to ensure dynamic and rapid development within the district with the 1DIF agenda in mind to create jobs.

19. To critically as a matter of urgency, re-look at the mandate of the National Buffer Stock Company (N.A.F.C.O) established in 2010 by the National Buffer Stock Policy.

20. To deliberately ensure the widening of the tax net to move from the about 2.5 million  contributors  and to increase the tax to GDP ratio from the existing 12.4%. (This has been the mantra for most goverments within the 32 years of our democracy in the 4th republic and nothing seems to work towards this goal). This becomes very worrying when i phantom to know that more than 80% of our revenue goes into emoluments and costs to debts as interest payments.

In  conclusion, most at times I shiver and become sad when i see where Malaysia , Singapore and South Korea have gotten to in terms of their economic and governance structures and also where less than 40% of items sold in our shopping Malls are produced locally. It is my believe that the twenty (20) pointers hightlighted above to an extent, will  push us as a country to our desired destination.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of blessed memory should be the inspirational factor of this desired destination of our country Ghana, because his deeds and legacies are evident enough to tell us, it is possible though a very difficult and daunting hurdle. I end to say, A country becomes self-sufficient when there are real sustainable wages and salaries pivoted on an economy built on a solid industrial foundation.

Long live Ghana , Long live Mother Africa

Yours Sincerely,

SIGNED:

Alfred Mensah-Onumah

Citizen of GHANA.

The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has stated his opposition to the use of sirens on vehicles by Members of Parliament (MPs) to ease transportation during their duties. Speaking in a widely circulated video, Mr Dumelo expressed his personal stance on the matter, noting that while sirens may facilitate movement, he does not consider them necessary for his work as an MP.

“I was with him in parliament for orientation, but I just left. A Plus says we need sirens, maybe that's his opinion, but personally, I don't think I need a siren,” he said, referring to comments made by his colleague, Kwame Obeng Asare, popularly known as A Plus.

However, he reiterated his personal disagreement with this view. “I know some people do, and it's a debate that has been ongoing for some time, but personally, I don't,” he added.

The debate over whether MPs should be permitted to use sirens for transportation continues to divide opinions, with some arguing that it enhances efficiency in performing their duties, while others view it as unnecessary and disruptive.

According to the highly-rated tactician, most clubs in the league excel at defending, making it challenging for opponents to break through their defensive setups. Speaking after his team’s narrow 2-0 victory over Gold Stars, the coach highlighted the ease with which Ghanaian teams adapt to defensive play compared to attacking strategies.

“The nature of the league is such that it’s very defensive. Most of the teams can defend very well. It’s easier for Ghanaian teams to defend than to attack and create and score,” coach Prosper Narteh Ogum remarked during the post-match interview. While commending the defensive strengths of the league, Coach Ogum also reiterated his concerns about goal-scoring challenges, a persistent issue among Premier League clubs.

He noted that while teams manage to create scoring opportunities, the absence of natural finishers often costs them crucial points.

“Goal scoring has actually been an issue in the league. If you watch closely, every team is able to create chances, but it’s about scoring. Goal scoring is an art. Sometimes, if you have people who are natural goal scorers, it is easier. But unfortunately, we don’t have these natural goal scorers across the teams, and that is why sometimes a team can play very well and still not get a point,” Ogum explained.

This weekend, coach Prosper Narteh Ogum is hoping his Asante Kotoko side will be able to score goals in their game against Medeama SC on Sunday to merit all three maximum points.

Cape Coast, known as Ghana's "City of Firsts," has a rich historical legacy filled with pioneering achievements. Here are the top three reasons why it holds this title:

1. Home to the First Castle in Sub-Saharan Africa

Cape Coast Castle, originally built by the Swedes in the mid-17th century and later expanded by the British, was the first substantial European structure in Sub-Saharan Africa. It served as a hub for trade, education, and colonial administration, marking Cape Coast as a key gateway for European-African interactions.

2. First Formal School in Ghana

The city boasts Ghana's first formal school, the Philip Quaque Boys’ School, established in 1765. Named after Philip Quaque, the first African Anglican priest, this school laid the foundation for formal education in Ghana and remains a symbol of Cape Coast's educational legacy.

3. Birthplace of Ghana’s Oldest Secondary Schools

Cape Coast is home to some of Ghana’s most prestigious secondary schools, including Mfantsipim School (1876) and Wesley Girls' High School (1836). These institutions were the first of their kind, setting high standards for education in the country and producing many of Ghana's prominent leaders and intellectuals.

These achievements underscore Cape Coast's pivotal role in Ghana’s history, education, and culture.

The Ghana Health Service adolescent focal person, Madam Dora Jones Yaidoo, thanked PPAG for bringing various stakeholders within the assembly to have a dialogue on early child marriage and teenage pregnancy and how they can all work together in fighting against it in the sub-metro because it is one of the major challenges affecting human development within the subregion and that this initiative is very important.

She was speaking during a pre-implementation meeting with District Child Marriage Elimination Committee members, a program organized by PPAG with partnership and sponsorship from UNFPA at the district assembly hall. Madam said that teenage pregnancy is one of the contributing factors towards maternal and child mortality in Cape Coast metro. For instance, when you take 100,000 pregnant women in Greece, you will only record 2-3 maternal mortalities as compared to Ghana, where when you take 100,000 pregnant women, you can record about 365 maternal mortalities. This is due to the fact that the education level about teenage pregnancy and its implications is very low in Ghana and Cape Coast metro as well.

She added that, when you take the central region, on average we are doing about 19% teenage pregnancy, but when you slow down to the Cape Coast metro, we are doing like 7%, and looking at it, you will think that the Cape Coast metro is doing well by reducing teenage pregnancy, but that’s not the case.

If you take a critical look at the situation we can get about 20% but the only reason is that, the bigger institution in Cape Coast like the university of cape coast, the technical university and its surrounding tertiary institution including the various secondary schools account for the elite so there for their surroundings communities records very low percentage in teenage pregnancy because, such communities has a higher education and are well informed about teenage pregnancy as compared to the rural communities which have been recording higher percentages because the education level there is very low, and because the bigger majority population in cape coast covers the elite, when you strike the average you will get something like 7% so you will think cape coast is doing well but it is not.

Teenage pregnancy may be caused by violence; for example, some teachers will ask their female students to accompany them to his house with some bags and books, but at the end of the day, he will force and have sex with the adolescent girl, which may lead to teenage pregnancy and child marriage.

Another cause of teenage pregnancy is peer pressure. Some of the adolescents tease themselves, asking, Have you tasted sex before? If not, then you are called all sorts of names like John, Colo, Villager, etc., which will force the other party to also try and engage himself/herself in sex, which may cause teenage pregnancy and child marriage. Sexual intercourse is only meant for married couples; hence, as an adolescent, leading a chaste life is what is best because leading a chaste life will help you to abstain from sex and help you to focus on your education, which will not result in pregnancies and child marriage, she cited.

Madam added that poverty can lead to reduced access to quality education, making it difficult for teenagers to acquire knowledge about reproductive health, family planning, and safe sex practices. Again, economic vulnerability also may cause child marriage and teenage pregnancy; thus, teenagers from poor backgrounds may be more vulnerable to exploitation, including transactional sex, which can lead to unintended pregnancies.

Also, lack of access to healthcare can also contribute to teenage pregnancy; thus, poverty can limit access to healthcare services, including reproductive health care, making it difficult for teenagers to access contraception, prenatal care, and other essential services.

Cultural and Social Norms: In some poverty-stricken communities, early marriage and childbearing may be seen as a way to secure financial stability or escape poverty.

Madam stated that, to resolve teenage pregnancies and child marriage challenges in Cape Coast Metro, parents must provide the following:

• Education and Awareness
• Access to Healthcare and Family Planning
• Economic Empowerment and Support
• Community and Family Engagement
• Policy and legislative support.

By implementing these strategies, we can work towards the reduction of teenage pregnancy rates and supporting the health, well-being, and development of adolescents in Cape Coast metropolis and Ghana as well.

Mr. Martin Datsomor, the representative from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), also stressed the fact that parental irresponsibility also contributes to teenage pregnancy in Cape Coast metro. In his presentation, he stated that most often some parents demand basic things like soap, money, data, call credit, bags, food, etc. from their teenage girls, knowing very well that these teenagers have not reached the working-class age and do not have the capacity to work and earn income. These girls, trying to provide these items to their parents, end up engaging themselves in transactional sex, which often results in teenage pregnancy and child marriage.

He added that inadequate sex education and lack of supervision also contribute to child marriage and teenage pregnancy; thus, parents may not provide accurate and comprehensive information about sex, contraception, and reproductive health, and again, most parents may not monitor their teenager's activities, leaving them vulnerable to peer pressure and risky behaviors.

Inconsistent discipline and unhealthy relationships: Parents may not set clear boundaries or consequences, leading to a lack of accountability and responsibility, and parents may model unhealthy relationships, demonstrating a lack of respect, trust, and communication.

Substance abuse and irresponsible behavior: Parents may engage in substance abuse, normalizing risky behaviors and increasing the likelihood of teenage pregnancy, and most parents may engage in irresponsible behaviors, such as infidelity or reckless spending, which can influence their teenager's attitudes and behaviors. Lack of open communication and inadequate listening: Parents may not maintain open and honest communication with their teenager, making it difficult to discuss sensitive topics like sex and relationships, and most parents may not listen actively to their teenager's concerns, feelings, and experiences. He cited.

The PPAG field officer for Cape Coast metro, Madam Rebecca Kporxa, thanked the committee members for honoring her invitation towards the program for making it successful and encouraged all the stakeholders to fully participate and share more ideas on how they can collectively work to achieve the goals of the 4th quarter activity project for 2024.
