Residents and businesses in the Tema Metropolis and several parts of Accra are expected to face a temporary disruption in water supply following a major burst on a 42-inch transmission pipeline, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced.

The disruption will affect the entire Tema Metropolis and large sections of Accra, including Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie, and surrounding communities.

In a statement issued on Monday, January 19, 2026, GWL explained that the burst occurred along a critical transmission line serving Accra’s eastern corridor, resulting in widespread interruptions to water distribution.

According to the utility provider, engineers and technical teams were immediately deployed after the fault was detected and have been working continuously to repair the damaged pipeline. GWL noted that the size of the transmission main and the complexity of the repairs require careful handling to ensure safety, durability, and efficiency.

The company assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to complete the repair works as quickly as possible and restore normal water supply.

GWL has advised essential service providers, particularly schools and hospitals, to contact the company for support during the period of disruption.

“Water supply will be restored immediately upon completion of the repair works,” the statement added, indicating that further updates will be communicated as the situation develops.
