The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has announced the closure of Ghana’s iconic Independence Square and its surrounding areas as part of preparations for the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.

According to an official press release issued by the Honorable Deputy Minister, Mark Okraku-Mantey, the closure will take effect from midnight on December 31, 2024, and remain in place until January 8, 2025. The directive aims to facilitate the smooth organization of the event and ensure public safety during this period. As part of the preparations, National Security will cordon off the Independence Square and its environs.

The closure is expected to disrupt regular public and tourist access to the historical landmark, which is a major attraction for both locals and visitors. The Ministry has urged the general public and tourists to comply with the directive and make alternative arrangements during this time. The Independence Square, also known as Black Star Square, has been a symbol of national pride and a venue for significant state events, including Independence Day celebrations and presidential inaugurations.

The swearing-in ceremony marks a critical moment in Ghana’s democratic journey, and preparations are being meticulously planned to reflect the importance of the occasion. H.E. John Dramani Mahama, who emerged victorious in the recent elections, will take the oath of office as the President of Ghana in the presence of dignitaries, government officials, and citizens from across the nation.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has expressed its gratitude to the public for their understanding and cooperation. Residents and commuters are advised to plan ahead and avoid the restricted areas during the closure.
