Yaw Sarpong, one of Ghana’s most influential gospel musicians, has passed away, marking the end of an era in Akan gospel music. He was the founder and long-time leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, a gospel group formed in the mid-1980s that became a pillar of Christian music in Ghana. With a music career that spanned over four decades, Yaw Sarpong was known for songs deeply rooted in scripture, discipline, and reverence, many of which became timeless hymns in churches across the country.

His leadership helped shape modern Ghanaian gospel music, blending traditional Akan rhythms with contemporary choral arrangements. Over the years, he mentored many musicians and remained consistent in using music strictly as a ministry rather than for personal fame. In recognition of his immense contribution, he received several honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Award shortly before his passing.
His death comes at a painful time for the Asomafo family and the gospel community, as the band recently lost one of its key and most loved members, Mama Tiwaa. Mama Tiwaa, whose powerful and soulful voice became a defining part of the Asomafo sound, also passed away not long ago after decades of service with the group. Her presence on stage and in recordings played a major role in the group’s identity and success.
With the passing of both Yaw Sarpong and Mama Tiwaa, Ghana has lost two giants whose voices and commitment shaped generations of music. . Their legacy lives on through the music they left behind and the lives they touched through faith and song.
