The historic win against Benfica sees the blaugranes seal their place in the next round while avoiding a play-off. The final position for the blaugranes is yet to be determined as there are still games to be played in the penultimate round of fixtures, plus the matchday eight set of fixtures. They are currently in second position on 18 points, three points behind leaders Liverpool.
In the event of a tie on points, positions will be decided on goal difference and if that is not enough then a further series of stats begging with goals scored will be taken into consideration.
As such, after completing the league phase at home against Atalanta on 29 January, there will be a hiatus until March regarding European competition for the blaugranes. The home leg will be played on 4/5 March, with the away leg on 11/12 March, and a draw beforehand will determine who plays who.
Qualification was extremely important for Hansi Flick's side, as the coach mentioned before the Benfica game that not having to contest a play-off would allow for more rest and preparation. The blaugranes are still in all three competitions and the coming months will see a demanding run of games in LaLiga, the latter stages of the Copa del Rey, plus the knockout phase of the Champions League.
